Faith and Action

A behind-the-scenes commentary on the work of Faith and Action--America's only Christian mission to elected and appointed officials located across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court and in the heart of Capitol Hill!

I was raised in Western New York (state) in a non-religious home. As a teenager I searched for spiritual truth and found it in Jesus Christ. Today I'm an ordained Evangelical minister and missionary to elected and appointed officials on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. I invite you to join me in reminding our top government leaders that we are all equally dependent on and accountable to an Almighty God!

A HOPEFUL SIGN AMIDST DOOM

Your missionary to Capitol Hill, Washington, DC, Rob Schenck, reporting:

Here's a hopeful sign: dozens of young people gathering on the majestic West Lawn of the US Capitol to pray for our country. My long-time friend and ally, Rev. Pat Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition, has for the last week been using our ministry center  as a staging ground for "The Awakening." This 24/7 vigil has been underway since Sunday night.

Besides the beauty of 20-somethings on their faces beseeching heaven for mercy and grace on our Land, there is the 16-foot cross they've erected. Yes, that's a towering, gleaming cross that preaches it's own silent message, drawing hundreds of tourists to it, some from as far away as China and South Africa. (See Monday's Weekly Photo Feature at our website.)

I did a video at the site, including a conversation with Joe Butner who built the Cross--the only cross to ever be erected on the Capitol grounds!

Check out this video. I trust "The Awakening" will be as inspirational to you as it is to me:

Rob,
In doing a search on evangelicals and social action I came across your comments at the LA times on Rick Warren and then found your blog response where you admitted you were wrong on an issue. Thanks for admitting your error, something often not seen.
If you were wrong there, can I challenge you to look at a bigger issue.
Please look at Greg Boyd's book, "The Myth of a Christian Nation: How the Quest for Political Power Is Destroying the Church" There are some real warnings there about the dangers of Christians putting too much weight in trying to change things via Washington. Lets don't hurt Christ's witness by merging God's ways with Americas.
